Malefic

Ma·le·fic

/ˈmæ.lə.fɪk/

A planet or point considered to bring challenges, obstacles, or tension in astrology, often associated with difficulty or restriction.

In Hellenistic astrology, malefic planets are those whose influence tends to produce conflict, delays, or tests, shaping experiences through struggle or limitation. Traditionally, Saturn and Mars are considered the primary malefics, reflecting restriction, discipline, or active tension, while the context of their placement and aspects determines the severity or nature of their influence. Understanding malefic energy allows astrologers to identify areas of challenge in a natal chart and to interpret how difficulties can lead to growth, caution, or strategic action. The Greek term kakos and the Latin term maleficus describe these planets as agents of hardship or testing, rather than purely negative forces.
