Aversion

 A-ver-sion

/əˈvɜːr.ʒən/

A term from traditional astrology referring to a condition where planets occupy whole signs that lack a connection, specifically the semi-sextile (30°) and the inconjunct (150°) relationships. Therefore having an inability for the planets to "see" each other. This signifies a lack of direct relationship, due in part to their difference in polarity, element, and mode.

The concept of Aversion (Greek: apostrophē, "turn away") is fundamental to Hellenistic and Medieval astrology, emphasizing that some zodiacal relationships prevent planets from engaging with or influencing each other effectively. This happens because the signs are not connected by one of the "major" Ptolomaic aspects (conjunction, opposition, trine, square, and sextile), which allow for a shared quality or "gaze." Specifically, signs that are semi-sextile or inconjunct (also called quincunx) are in aversion. When two planets are in aversion, they cannot transmit light or share signification, often suggesting a difficulty, blind spot, or inability for the energies to cooperate or integrate smoothly in the native's life.
