Bounds
/baʊndz/
Unequal divisions of each zodiac sign, with each division being ruled by one of the five non-luminary planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, or Mercury). Also known as "terms" or the Latin fines. A planet located within a specific bound is said to be influenced by the planet that rules that bound, known as the "bound lord" or "term ruler."
In Hellenistic astrology, bounds add a crucial layer of detail and specificity to chart interpretation. While the domicile lord of a sign sets the overall theme for a planet placed there, the bound lord acts as a more immediate manager or host, influencing how that planet's energy is expressed and managed within a specific degree range. For example, if Mars is in the sign of Aries, it is in its own domicile and is generally strong. However, if it falls within the bound of Jupiter (6-11° Aries in the Egyptian system), its aggressive nature will be managed and directed by Jupiter's themes of expansion, justice, or beneficence. The condition of the bound lord in the chart is therefore critical; a well-placed bound lord can support a planet, while a poorly-placed one can create challenges. The most commonly used system in the Hellenistic tradition is the "Egyptian" system of bounds.
