Lot

/lɒt/

A calculated point in an astrological chart determined by measuring the distance between planets or other significant points and projecting that distance to a reference point.

In Hellenistic astrology, a Lot is a symbolic position rather than a physical celestial body. To find a Lot, an astrologer measures the arc between two planets or points in the zodiac and then applies that same arc from a reference point, usually the Ascendant. Each Lot represents a specific theme in life, such as fortune, purpose, marriage, or family. The Lot of Fortune is the most well-known example, yet dozens of others were used in Hellenistic and Medieval astrology. Understanding Lots helps astrologers uncover subtle influences and patterns in a chart that are not immediately apparent from the planets alone. The Greek term for Lot is klēros, and the Latin term is pars.
