This webinar provides an overview of Jyotish, a traditional form of astrology that’s been in continuous practice for over a millennium. Although its core philosophies, principles and techniques originated in India, it has successfully integrated select elements from Greek, Persian and other influences.
This webinar identifies Jyotish’s primary features—its use of the sidereal zodiac, whole sign houses, traditional rulerships in the absence of the outer planets, special aspects, the importance of the moon’s nodes, and a greatly-expanded range of meanings associated with each of the 12 houses.
One unique feature of Jyotish is that of yogas—a series of planetary patterns that function as signatures of enterprise, good fortune, intellectual brilliance, power, status, talent, wealth, etc. A full catalog of yogas runs to 300, although practicing jyotishis typically work with 60 or less.
Another key feature is the time-lord system of dashas, whereby each of nine celestial bodies (two luminaries, five planets, two nodes) assume control to dispense the promise implied by their dignity and placement in the chart. Although dasha periods range from 6-20 years, sub-periods called bhuktis provide greater specificity down to the level of four months.
Jyotish makes great use of divisional charts, of which there are 20, allowing analysis and prediction regarding career, education, family, health, spirituality, wealth, etc.
Like western astrology, Jyotish has its branches—jataka (natal), prashna (horary), muhurta (electional), varshaphala (annual returns) as well as multiple other applications, most notably horoscope matching for compatibility analysis.
