al·ti·tude
ˈalˌtiˌto͞od/
- The height of a celestial object above or below the horizon, measured as an angular distance.
- Used to indicate the apparent elevation of a planet or star in the sky, ranging from -90° (directly below) to +90° (directly overhead).
Altitude is a key value in observational and locational astrology. A planet with positive altitude is above the horizon and therefore visible (e.g., +5°), while negative altitude means it is below the horizon (e.g., -5°). Astrologers may consider altitude when assessing a planet’s visibility, strength, or heliacal status, especially in traditional and electional techniques.
