In Hellenistic and Medieval astrology, the Alcochoden is the planet that grants or distributes the years of life in longevity techniques.
The term comes from Arabic astrological tradition and was transmitted into Medieval astrology through translated texts. After identifying the Hyleg, or giver of life, astrologers determined the Alcochoden by examining the planet with the greatest authority or connection to the Hyleg through dignity and aspect. The Alcochoden was then used to calculate the length and quality of life according to established systems of planetary years. Medieval astrologers regarded this technique as central to natal predictive work concerning vitality and lifespan.
